Tête à Tête

Tête à Tête is a short animated drama that explores themes of connection, isolation and female identity in the context of today’s digital world. The story follows the fun-loving Kerri as she spends the weekend with her sister's family. When tensions begin to flare, technology provides easy respite. But, when Kerri's gaze shifts from the screen, she discovers a deeper kind of connection.

What an immersive, emotionally honest film!

“Really pushed the bar…it’s not even just for emerging talent…just generally”
— Rachelle Lambden, Laika Studios
A deceptively simple, elegantly understated visual style, it can be easy to overlook the intricate and seamless meshing of drawn and stop motion that is playing out here. Hiding in plain view and utilised perfectly to demarcate the variety of physical and mental ‘spaces’ the film moves around in, it’s a wonderful example of this hybrid technique and all the more ambitious for being a student film.
— Malcom Turner - London International Animation Festival
The concept is simple enough: a family struggles to connect with each other while their phones dominate their lives. The animation style is super unique though, using black and white stop motion for the faces, hands and objects while their bodies and the setting are all in color and use life size models. It’s eye-catching and works perfectly when it uses this style to portray phone activity visually, at times even having the Instagram posts create a literal wall between the characters.
